The Los Angeles Chargers have a clear blueprint for the future, and it starts in the secondary. In a way-too-early 2027 mock draft from CBS Sports, analyst Ryan Wilson projects the Chargers to select Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV with the 28th overall pick—a move that would bolster a defense already trending in the right direction.
So far, early mock drafts have consistently pointed the Chargers toward either defensive tackle or cornerback. Robinson, however, is a name that could shake things up. After a breakout 2025 season, the Bulldogs' star is quickly playing his way into first-round conversations. Wilson describes Robinson as "a physical corner who excels at reading the QB and being consistently disruptive at the catch point," adding that he "plays with the confidence and technical traits to thrive on an island, whether in man or off-coverage."
Robinson's journey to this point is a testament to patience and development. He saw limited action as a freshman in 2024, logging just three tackles over four games before redshirting. But in 2025, the 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back seized a starting role, appearing in 14 games and starting 12. The results were impressive: four interceptions, seven pass breakups, Second-Team All-SEC honors, and the FWAA Freshman Defensive Player of the Year award. Perhaps most telling, he finished second in the SEC in catch rate allowed, a stat that signals elite coverage skills.
For context, Robinson's 36.7% catch rate allowed trailed only Mississippi State's Kelley Jones (28.9%) among SEC cornerbacks in 2025. That kind of production has analysts buzzing about his potential to become the top corner in the conference next season. If he continues on this trajectory, he might not be available at pick 28 by the time the draft rolls around—but for now, the Chargers can dream.
What do you think, Chargers fans? Is cornerback the right priority, or should the team look elsewhere? Let us know in the comments.
