The spotlight was brighter than ever at Churchill Downs on Friday night, and trainer Chad Brown's faith in his filly, Always a Runner, proved unshakable. Despite entering the Kentucky Oaks with just two career starts, the 3-year-old delivered a commanding performance to capture the 152nd running of the historic race—the first ever held under the iconic track's new lights and broadcast in prime time.
"Only two starts coming into this, but she's been a star since Day One," Brown said after the victory, his confidence validated once again.
Brown had been vocal about his belief in Always a Runner, even as her limited experience raised eyebrows. A virus that swept through his barn, causing both his filly and his Kentucky Derby hopeful, Emerging Market, to battle pneumonia, delayed their preparations. But Brown never wavered. Now, all eyes turn to Saturday, where Emerging Market will attempt to complete a rare Oaks-Derby double—a feat last achieved by trainer Kenny McPeek in 2024 with Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan.
The Oaks field was trimmed to 13 after scratches from Bottle of Rogue, My Miss Mo, Bella Ballerina, and Nycon, but the reduced number did nothing to dull the intensity. A crowd of more than 100,000 packed the stands, undeterred by the late 8:40 p.m. post time, as the fillies charged 1 1/8 miles under the glow of Churchill's new lights. The historic setting—a potential test run for moving the Kentucky Derby to prime time—added an electric atmosphere to an already competitive race.
Always a Runner handled it all with the poise of a seasoned veteran, backing up her trainer's instincts. Now, Brown hopes his winning formula carries over to Saturday, where Emerging Market will look to make it two for two on the biggest weekend in thoroughbred racing.
