The ASUN softball tournament is heating up, and the conference's two powerhouse teams are on a collision course for the winner's bracket final. Top-seeded Central Arkansas and No. 2 Stetson both delivered commanding performances on May 7 at the University of North Florida's Softball Complex, setting the stage for a must-watch showdown on May 8 at noon.
Stetson (34-20) edged out North Florida 4-2 in a gritty battle, powered by first baseman Nicole Edmiaston's 2-for-2 day at the plate and relief pitcher Hayley Arnold's dominant 2.2 hitless innings. The Hatters' offense struck early, taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning after a two-base error by UNF's left fielder, and they never looked back. Meanwhile, Central Arkansas (35-18-1) showcased their offensive firepower with a five-run second inning, capped by Addie Graham's three-run homer, to run-rule Jacksonville University 8-0 in just five innings.
These two teams have a history of high-stakes clashes. They last met in the 2025 ASUN Tournament, where Stetson won 10-1, but the Sugar Bears claimed three regular-season victories against the Hatters earlier this year. With both teams boasting elite offenses—Stetson leads the conference in batting average (.315), followed closely by Central Arkansas (.312)—this winner's bracket final promises to be a slugfest. The Sugar Bears also top the ASUN in runs per game (6.12), with Stetson right behind at 6.1.
On the elimination side of the bracket, seventh-seeded North Florida (38-21) faced off against No. 3 North Alabama (36-15) after their loss to Stetson. Jacksonville University (34-19) will take on the winner of that elimination game on May 8 at 2:30 p.m., fighting to keep their tournament hopes alive.
For Stetson, the path to victory was fueled by timely hitting and stellar relief pitching. After UNF's Addyson Bruneman hit her second homer of the tournament in the fifth inning, Arnold entered the circle and quickly shut down the Ospreys' momentum, retiring the final two batters on a fielder's choice. The Hatters added insurance runs in the third and fourth innings, including a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single from Edmiaston.
As the tournament moves forward, all eyes are on the winner's bracket final. Will Central Arkansas's powerful offense prevail, or will Stetson's balanced attack and clutch pitching carry the day? One thing is certain: this is softball at its finest, and fans won't want to miss a pitch.
