In the ever-evolving landscape of college basketball transfers, former Centerville High School standout Gabe Cupps has found his next destination. The 6-foot-2 guard is transferring from Ohio State to the University of Illinois Chicago, announcing his decision just eight days after entering the portal.
Cupps, who began his collegiate career with two seasons at Indiana, played one year for the Buckeyes. He appeared in 33 games this past season, averaging 1.7 points in 12.3 minutes per game. His sophomore year at Indiana was cut short by injury, limiting him to just four appearances and resulting in a medical redshirt, leaving him with two seasons of eligibility remaining for his fresh start.
He joins a UIC Flames program under coach Rob Ehsan that is showing positive momentum. After breaking a four-year streak of losing records in Ehsan's first season, the team finished 19-16 last year. Now competing in the competitive Missouri Valley Conference, UIC offers Cupps a significant opportunity to carve out a larger role and contribute to a team looking to build towards its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004.
