The Boston Celtics have some soul-searching to do this offseason. On Saturday, they joined an unfortunate club—only 14 teams in NBA history have blown a 3-1 playoff lead. After holding full control of their first-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Celtics collapsed, sending themselves into an early summer exit. For an 18-time champion, that stings. And now, it might spark a blockbuster trade.
CBS Sports' Sam Quinn thinks the Celtics should seriously consider cutting ties with Jaylen Brown. His proposed target? None other than Giannis Antetokounmpo—the Golden State Warriors' presumed top $175 million trade target. Quinn argues that while Brown has been a monumental contributor, the Celtics' second consecutive early playoff exit could force a change in thinking.
"Giannis Antetokounmpo is two years older than Brown," Quinn wrote. "He's also a much bigger injury risk. This isn't as simple as pairing two megastars and waltzing to the Finals. But in practice, blowing a 3-1 lead to the 76ers would force almost anyone to reexamine their identity."
The logic? Antetokounmpo is a more impactful player than Brown. Pairing him with Jayson Tatum could create a powerhouse duo that's must-see TV. The 6-foot-11 forward is an elite transition scorer, a change-of-pace extraordinaire, and a physically imposing defender. For a team that earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and had real potential to go the distance, this kind of shake-up might be exactly what the doctor ordered.
Before the playoffs, trading Brown for Antetokounmpo likely wasn't on Boston's radar. But after another early exit, the Celtics may need to rethink their identity—and a swap like this could redefine their future.
