The Boston Celtics are facing a pivotal offseason after a stunning first-round playoff exit, and one former NBA star believes a blockbuster trade could reshape the team's future.
Fresh off an unexpected 4-3 series loss to the Philadelphia 76ers—after holding a commanding 3-1 lead—the Celtics find themselves at a crossroads. The 18-time champions dominated Game 4 with a 128-96 victory, only to drop three straight games and watch their season end prematurely. Now, with the 2026-27 campaign on the horizon, roster changes seem almost inevitable.
Enter Jeff Teague, a former All-Star guard who recently floated an intriguing trade scenario on the Club 520 podcast. Teague suggested the Celtics could swap Jaylen Brown for Houston Rockets superstar Kevin Durant—a two-time NBA champion and former Golden State Warriors legend who signed a $90 million deal with Houston.
"I could see him in Houston," Teague said. "Trade Kevin Durant for JB, I could see it, I could definitely see it. I don't like it, but I could definitely see it."
Durant remains one of the most impactful scorers in the league, even at this stage of his career. When he's locked in—knocking down one-to-two dribble pull-ups or creating space with calculated moves on the perimeter—he's nearly unstoppable. This season with the Rockets, the Texas product averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, shooting an impressive 52.0% from the field and 41.3% from three-point range.
However, Durant's playoff run was cut short by a left ankle sprain and bone bruise, forcing him to watch most of Houston's 4-1 first-round series loss to the Los Angeles Lakers from the sidelines.
For the Celtics, trading Brown—a dynamic two-way wing and 2024 Finals MVP—for Durant would represent a bold shift in philosophy. But with championship expectations looming and a roster that needs retooling, Boston may have to consider every option. Whether they ultimately pull the trigger on such a deal will depend on how aggressively they pursue a return to title contention.
