Real Betis missed a chance to take a step toward sealing its return to the Champions League after squandering a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday. Betis remained in fifth place with a four-point advantage over sixth-placed Celta Vigo, which put the pressure on the Seville-based side after it won at Atletico Madrid 1-0. Spain clinched a bonus fifth entry into the Champions League on Thursday when Rayo Vallecano’s win against Strasbourg in the Conference League semifinals gave Spain an insurmountable edge over Germany in the race for an extra berth.

La Liga's race for Champions League qualification just got a whole lot more interesting. With Spain securing a coveted fifth berth in Europe's elite competition, the pressure is mounting on Real Betis after they let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers.

Betis looked in control at Real Sociedad, racing to a 2-0 lead thanks to a stunning first-half strike from Anthony and a clinical finish from Ez Abde early in the second half. But soccer, as always, had other plans. Orri Óskarsson pulled one back for the hosts, and Mikel Oyarzabal converted a stoppage-time penalty after a handball by Diego Llorente, leaving Betis to settle for a frustrating 2-2 draw.

Despite the setback, Betis still sits in fifth place with a four-point cushion over sixth-placed Celta Vigo. But Celta is breathing down their necks after grinding out a gritty 1-0 win at Atlético Madrid on Saturday. With just three games left in the season—and nine points still up for grabs—every match feels like a final.

This is a massive moment for Betis. Under manager Manuel Pellegrini, the Seville-based side has consistently qualified for the Europa League or Conference League over the past five seasons. But the Champions League has eluded them since the 2005-06 campaign. Now, with Spain's extra spot secured—thanks to Rayo Vallecano's Conference League semifinal win over Strasbourg—the door is wide open.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, and Atlético Madrid have already locked up their places in next season's Champions League. Barcelona can clinch the La Liga title on Sunday with at least a draw against Madrid in a blockbuster Clásico at Camp Nou. That leaves one more spot up for grabs—and Betis is determined to claim it.

"We are sad for the result," Anthony admitted after the draw. "But we can't lament it much. We have a very important game at home on Tuesday against Elche. We have an advantage but must forget that and go forward game by game."

Betis will also be without striker Aitor Rubial for that crucial clash, as he was sent off late in the match against Sociedad. Every point matters now, and the race for Spain's fifth Champions League berth is heating up at just the right time.
