How many games will UNC win during its 2026 football season? CBS Sports projects a bowl game for the Tar Heels.

As the calendar flips toward August, North Carolina Tar Heels fans are counting down the days until kickoff. After a tough 2025 season that fell short of expectations, the team is eager to turn the page under head coach Bill Belichick's second year at the helm. With spring ball in the rearview mirror, early bowl projections are already sparking optimism in Chapel Hill.

Last season, the Tar Heels faced a relatively manageable schedule—only one ranked opponent in Virginia—and came agonizingly close to a marquee win before a failed two-point conversion dashed their hopes. But 2026 brings a much stiffer challenge. According to CBS Sports' post-spring bowl projections, UNC is slated to face Cincinnati in the Servpro First Responder Bowl, marking a return to the postseason after missing out in Belichick's debut campaign.

The road to that bowl game won't be easy. North Carolina opens its season across the Atlantic, taking on TCU in Dublin, Ireland, on August 29. After a Labor Day weekend bye, the Tar Heels return home to face East Tennessee State on September 12 before diving headfirst into a brutal stretch: a September 19 trip to Clemson, followed by a showdown with Notre Dame on October 3. The gauntlet continues with road games at Pitt (October 10) and Duke (October 17), then home contests against Syracuse (October 24) and 2026 CFP finalist Miami (October 31). The regular season closes with visits to UConn (November 7), home vs. Louisville (November 14), a trip to Virginia (November 21), and the traditional finale against NC State (November 28).

While the roster is still taking shape, fans can expect a high-powered offense orchestrated by new coordinator Bobby Petrino. The quarterback battle between Billy Edwards and Taron Dickens will be one to watch, while defensive standouts like Derek McDonald and Jaylen Harvey aim to anchor the unit. It's a daunting schedule, but as they say, everyone is 0-0 right now. Can the Tar Heels find six wins and punch their ticket to Dallas? Only time will tell, but the pieces are in place for a bounce-back season.
