Carson Benge is settling in at the big-league level, and Sunday afternoon marked his most complete performance yet in a Mets uniform. The 23-year-old rookie made an impact on both sides of the ball, helping New York secure a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels and clinch their first series victory in nearly a month.
Benge set the tone early with disciplined at-bats, drawing a six-pitch walk in the third inning and an eight-pitch walk in the fourth. That second free pass proved pivotal, as Mark Vientos launched a two-run homer just two pitches later to give the Mets the lead. After grounding out in the sixth, Benge delivered an RBI double down the right-field line in the eighth to add an insurance run. Vientos followed with another two-run blast, effectively putting the game out of reach.
But Benge wasn't done. In the bottom of the ninth, he sprinted to the right-field line and laid out for a spectacular diving catch, robbing Vaughn Grissom of extra bases and preserving the Mets' lead. "I was kind of surprised, to tell you the least," Benge said. "If I see a ball that I think I can get to, I'm going to go after it. I'm just glad I was able to come down with that one." Manager Carlos Mendoza added, "If that ball falls, that's a completely different inning."
The catch capped a string of strong performances from the former first-round pick, who is hitting .290 with three extra-base hits, four RBIs, and a .333 on-base percentage over his last 10 games. "It just feels like a juiced baseball game now," Benge said, reflecting on his growing comfort at the plate and in the field. For Mets fans, this is exactly the kind of all-around play that signals a bright future.
