Manchester United's interim head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that discussions over his long-term future at Old Trafford are nearing a resolution, with an announcement expected "pretty soon" as contract talks enter their final stages.
The 44-year-old former United midfielder has been in temporary charge since replacing Ruben Amorim, and his remarkable run of 10 wins from 15 Premier League games has made him the frontrunner for the permanent role. Club officials are currently negotiating a two-year deal with an option for a third, following strong recommendations from chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Speaking at United's Carrington training ground on Friday, Carrick addressed the ongoing speculation: "The future for me is going to be decided pretty soon. We knew that." His measured response comes as the club prepares for Sunday's penultimate league fixture against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, with an announcement potentially coming before kick-off.
Carrick's impressive tenure has earned widespread support from both the dressing room and the fanbase. The former England international has guided United to the brink of securing Champions League football next season, needing just one point from their final two matches to guarantee a third-place finish. His achievements have also earned him a place on the six-man shortlist for the Premier League's Manager of the Season award.
In a nod to club tradition, Carrick confirmed he will address supporters after the Forest game, following the custom established by legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson. "That's important anyway," he said. "The supporters are a massive part of this club. We thank them for the season; the last four months for me personally."
The interim boss also confirmed that 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder Casemiro will be available for what could be an emotional Old Trafford farewell on Sunday, adding another layer of significance to an already pivotal match for the club's immediate future.
