The NFL offseason has entered the heart of organized team activities, with OTAs now underway. Teams will soon begin minicamps as they move closer to the preseason. The Carolina Panthers still have several issues to address before minicamp and training…

As the NFL offseason shifts into high gear with OTAs in full swing and minicamps just around the corner, the Carolina Panthers received a surprising update on one of their key defensive additions. Defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who joined the team as a marquee free agent in 2025, recently underwent neck surgery earlier this month. While the news is concerning, there's a silver lining—Wharton is expected to return to action in 2026, though he'll likely begin the regular season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Neck injuries have become a particularly sensitive topic in the NFL, with players like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah navigating similar recoveries. The unpredictable nature of these setbacks means teams must prioritize long-term health over short-term gains, and the Panthers are taking a cautious approach with their investment. Wharton missed eight games during the 2025 season due to injury, and this surgery aims to address the lingering issue once and for all.

Wharton's journey to Carolina is a testament to perseverance. After going undrafted out of Missouri University of Science and Technology, he spent his first five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he developed into a reliable interior rotational lineman. His contributions were pivotal during the Chiefs' back-to-back Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII championship runs, earning him a reputation as a disruptive force in the trenches.

In 2024, Wharton enjoyed his most productive season, stepping into a larger role alongside star defensive tackle Chris Jones. Starting 10 games and appearing in all 17 contests, he posted 6.5 sacks, 29 tackles, one forced fumble, and seven tackles for loss. That breakout campaign made him one of the most sought-after free agents in 2025, landing him a three-year, $54 million contract with the Panthers.

Despite injuries limiting his impact last season, Wharton showed flashes of his potential and even suited up for Carolina's Wild Card game. As the Panthers continue to shore up their roster before training camp, the hope is that Wharton's surgery will pave the way for a full recovery and a return to the form that made him a coveted asset. For now, patience will be key as he works toward getting back on the field.
