The Arizona Cardinals are entering a new chapter. For the first time since drafting Kyler Murray, the franchise is preparing for life without their former franchise quarterback. Veteran Jacoby Brissett is currently penciled in as the starter, but the team and the signal-caller are locked in a contract dispute—Brissett is pushing for more guaranteed money ahead of the season.
This offseason, the Cardinals added some intriguing depth. They drafted former Miami Hurricanes star Carson Beck and signed veteran backup Gardner Minshew III. But lately, another name has been buzzing around the desert: Aaron Rodgers.
The four-time MVP and Super Bowl champion hasn't decided whether he'll play or retire. For a while, a return to the Pittsburgh Steelers seemed like the most likely outcome. However, recent chatter has linked Rodgers to Arizona, and the speculation is gaining steam.
CBS Sports' John Breech pointed out that a Rodgers-Cardinals pairing actually makes some sense. And Cardinals wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is all in on the idea. Bourne made his feelings clear on social media, expressing excitement about the possibility of catching passes from the legendary quarterback.
When Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur appeared on the Jim Rome Show, he was asked directly about the Rodgers rumors. His response was measured but revealing.
"Right now we're focused on the guys that we've got coming in," LaFleur said. "You've got the unit we have with Gardner [Minshew], Jacoby, and [Kedon] Slovis. And then we drafted Carson Beck in the third round. He'll be here on Thursday, finally. We're doing some Zoom stuff. So we've got a room we're excited to work with, and that's solely where my focus is."
LaFleur didn't shut the door on Rodgers, but it's clear he's prioritizing the quarterbacks already in the building. For now, the Cardinals are focused on what they have—but the rumor mill keeps spinning.
