Cardiff Rugby has made a decisive move for the future, appointing Corniel van Zyl as their new permanent head coach on a long-term deal. The South African, who initially joined the club as forwards coach in 2024, stepped into the interim role just before the 2025-26 season following Matt Sherratt's departure to the Welsh national team setup.

Van Zyl's impact has been immediate and impressive. With the club currently sitting sixth in the United Rugby Championship (URC) and firmly in the hunt for a top-eight playoff spot, his leadership has galvanized the squad during a critical phase of the season. This strong run of form has clearly convinced the Cardiff hierarchy that he is the right person for the job long-term.

"It is an honour and privilege to take the lead at Cardiff," said Van Zyl. "It is a club full of history, with an exciting future ahead. I love Cardiff. It is an environment with so many people that care deeply about the badge. That is my motivation to keep driving us forward."

The 47-year-old brings a wealth of experience, having served as a forwards coach at Free State Cheetahs, London Irish, and Ealing Trailfinders since retiring as a player in 2015. His credentials were strong enough to see him linked with the head coach role at Benetton, a position that ultimately went to former Wales boss Wayne Pivac.

Cardiff's managing director, Jamie Muir, expressed full confidence in the appointment. "We have built a strong working relationship this season and I have seen at first-hand the standards Corniel brings and drives every day," Muir stated. "We believe Corniel is the right person to lead our rugby programme and to continue strengthening every aspect of our high-performance environment."

Muir also addressed the timing, noting the club's deliberate approach: "We didn't want to rush into a decision when Matt Sherratt departed, but we have been impressed with Corniel." With the playoff race heating up, this stability and clear vision from the top could be the final piece Cardiff needs to secure a successful end to their campaign and build momentum for the seasons to come.
