Canada captain Alphonso Davies is facing a race against time to be fit for the World Cup after Bayern Munich confirmed the full-back will be sidelined for "several weeks" with a hamstring injury.
The 25-year-old was forced off during Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, a tense 1-1 draw that saw the holders advance 6-5 on aggregate. Bayern's medical staff have since confirmed the muscle injury, making it highly unlikely Davies will feature again for the German champions this season.
This latest setback comes at a critical moment for both player and country. Canada, co-hosts of the upcoming World Cup, open their campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 in Toronto. With just weeks until the tournament, every day of recovery counts.
Canada Soccer has moved quickly to reassure fans, confirming they are in "close contact" with Davies and Bayern's medical team. "Our focus is on supporting his recovery and providing every available resource, including specialized soft tissue expertise, to give him the best possible pathway back to full fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup," the federation said in a statement.
This isn't the first time Davies has faced a battle with injury. The dynamic left-back has endured a string of muscle problems since returning from a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear that kept him out for eight months. That injury occurred during a Concacaf Nations League match with Canada last March, sparking a heated dispute between Bayern and Canada Soccer over his workload.
Davies' agent publicly criticized the federation for starting him in what Bayern later called a "match of no sporting significance," accusing them of "gross negligence" given his history of muscle issues leading into the game.
The Bayern star, who has scored 15 goals in 58 appearances for Canada, has not played for his country since that fateful March 2025 match. He was also ruled out of their most recent camp with a separate hamstring problem. Head coach Jesse Marsch is expected to name his World Cup squad later this month, ahead of friendlies against Uzbekistan on June 1 and Ireland on June 5.
Despite the injury setbacks, Davies has logged 848 minutes across all competitions for Bayern this season. The newly-crowned Bundesliga champions travel to Wolfsburg on Saturday before hosting Cologne in their final home match. For Davies, the focus now shifts entirely to recovery—and making sure he's ready to lead Canada onto the world stage.
