Camborne Rugby Club has secured a historic promotion to National One, marking a monumental achievement for the Cornish side. They clinched the National Two West title and their place in the third tier by securing the crucial try-scoring bonus point needed, despite a narrow 41-34 away defeat to second-placed Luctonians. With a six-point lead and just one game remaining, their league victory is mathematically assured.
This promotion represents a significant leap, as it will be the club's first-ever season in the third tier of English club rugby. The rise continues a remarkable upward trajectory, coming just three years after their promotion to the fourth tier. With this achievement, Camborne becomes the first Cornish side to play at National One level since local rivals Redruth were relegated in 2011, solidifying their status as the second-highest ranked club in Cornwall, behind only the professional Cornish Pirates.
The club's success is a testament to its growing strength across all teams. Coach Tom Kessell, speaking to BBC Radio Cornwall, highlighted the collective effort: "Today we bear the fruits of getting the extra point that we needed to win the league, but it's been a long journey." He pointed to a culture of success, noting that while the first team won the league today, the seconds won their league last weekend and the women's team is also winning, calling it a "massive machine" moving behind the players.
Looking ahead, Kessell acknowledged the challenge but embraced the opportunity: "It's a big step up, but it's a challenge that we're looking forward to. The club wants to keep moving forward... we're excited for the challenge." Having set a goal to win one league this year, the club finds itself celebrating three, a clear sign of a program on the rise and building serious momentum for the challenges of National One.
