Cam Young stormed back into contention at the Truist Championship with a dazzling third-round 63 at Quail Hollow, setting the stage for a thrilling final day. After a measured start with rounds of 68 and 70, the 29-year-old exploded on Saturday, proving why he's now the world's No. 3 player.
Fresh off his dominant win at the Cadillac Championship—where he overcame an early one-stroke penalty at Trump National Doral—Young finds himself in a familiar position: chasing rather than leading. He sits just two shots behind Alex Fitzpatrick heading into Sunday, with a golden opportunity to claim his third PGA Tour title of 2026.
But despite his stellar ball-striking—ranking 23rd off the tee and 29th in approach—Young knows exactly where he needs to improve. His short game has been nothing short of exceptional, ranking 1st in strokes gained around the greens (gaining 5.182 shots on the field) and 2nd in strokes gained total. Yet, it's the putter that's giving him fits.
"Honestly on two of the ones I made on 15 and 16 I hit them both way too hard," Young admitted to reporters after his round. "They're really tricky and can get away from you without hitting a terrible putt. I've had some inexcusable three-and-a-half-footers coming back after having nine, ten, or twelve feet for birdie."
His putting ranks 13th in the field, but Young's self-assessment suggests room for improvement. "It was better today once I got past trying to make them as much. I'm sure it'll be quick tomorrow, so I'm just trying to keep getting closer and hope I get a feel for them."
With his chipping and pitching firing on all cylinders, Young has gained over 10 strokes on the field this week in Charlotte. If he can dial in those short putts, Sunday could be another memorable chapter in his remarkable season. The hunt is on.
