There are losing streaks, and then there are losing streaks that make you question everything — the kind that make a rational fan say things they never thought they’d say.
For WFAN host Evan Roberts, that moment arrived Sunday afternoon, when the Mets dropped their 11th consecutive game, falling to a gut-wrenching 7-15 on the season.
“I, for one, am ready to fire Carlos Mendoza,” Roberts said, via YouTube. “I have had the clock strike midnight.”
Roberts acknowledges that this isn’t purely a Mendoza problem.
The roster has been anemic offensively. Devin Williams, once a reliable weapon, has been a disaster. The offense can’t manufacture runs. Juan Soto isn’t back — yet.

Roberts acknowledged all of it. But here’s the thing about a sinking ship: acknowledgment doesn’t stop the water from rushing in.
“If you want to call me the irrational, petulent child, you have every right, but I’m just going to be open,” Roberts said. “I’m going to be honest and I’m going to be brutal with everybody. They got to fire the manager.”
Co-host Shaun Morash, who was filling in for Giants legend Tiki Barber, didn’t push back hard. Eleven straight losses is eleven straight losses, and as Morash pointed out, better managers than Carlos Mendoza have been shown the door for far less.
The question isn’t really whether Mendoza deserves to be fired in a pure baseball sense — it’s whether a firing accomplishes anything meaningful.
A managerial change, even an imperfect or unfair one, some believe, can reset the emotional temperature of a clubhouse that has gone completely cold.
“Carlos Mendoza, just for the sign to the clubhouse that this can’t stand, has to be fired,” Morash said.
