After nearly a decade at the helm, David Schuster has officially stepped down as head coach of the Mission Prep football program in San Luis Obispo, California. Schuster announced his resignation over the weekend via social media, marking the end of an era for the Royals' gridiron squad.
Taking over in 2016, Schuster compiled an impressive 61-34 record over nine seasons. His tenure saw the program evolve from an eight-man Division 6 team in his first two years to a competitive 11-man Division III squad. The Royals hit their stride between 2021 and 2023, posting a combined 26-9 record—a testament to Schuster's ability to build a winning culture.
"Today, I officially resigned from Mission Prep Football. I have lived a dream for 9 years as the head coach of this beautiful school," Schuster shared in an emotional statement. "To everyone who signed The Bricks, I love you dearly and it has been my greatest honor to be your coach."
The 2025 season proved challenging, with Mission Prep finishing 3-8 and ranked No. 474 in California according to the final Massey Rankings. Still, Schuster leaves behind a program deeply rooted in the school's mission of shaping well-rounded student-athletes through scholarship, leadership, and service.
For fans of California high school football, this transition is a reminder of the passion and dedication that coaches bring to the game—season after season, win or loss. Whether you're tracking scores or celebrating the next generation of talent, the spirit of the sport lives on in every snap, every sideline, and every coach who gives it their all.
