The Calder Cup Playoffs are heating up, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have kicked off their Atlantic Division Final series in style. On Tuesday night, the Penguins blanked the Springfield Thunderbirds 2-0 in Game 1, taking an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-five showdown.
The game was a tight defensive battle through the first period, with both teams feeling each other out. But the second period belonged to a rising star. Bill Zonnon, a promising Penguins prospect, scored his first-ever AHL goal in his very first AHL game—and what a goal it was. Picking up the puck near the left circle, Zonnon drove hard to the net and pulled off a slick backhand move to beat the Thunderbirds' netminder, putting WBS up 1-0 midway through the frame. It was a moment that highlighted his underrated net-front ability and gave fans a glimpse of his offensive potential.
Carrying that slim lead into the third period, the Penguins needed some insurance—and Tanner Howe delivered. With just over 12 minutes remaining, Howe broke in on a clean breakaway and fired a shot top shelf, doubling the lead to 2-0. The bench erupted, and the team knew they had some breathing room.
From there, it was all about defense. WBS locked things down in their own zone, and goaltender Sergei Murashov was simply outstanding. He stopped everything that came his way, earning his first shutout of the playoffs. Murashov is in the zone right now—tracking the puck well, controlling rebounds with confidence, and looking unbeatable. Defenseman Harrison Brunicke also turned in a stellar performance, making an impact in all three zones and driving play both offensively and defensively.
The series now shifts to Game 2, set for Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET. If the Penguins can keep up this level of play, they’ll be tough to beat. For fans of the game, this is the kind of playoff hockey that gets the adrenaline pumping—and makes you proud to wear the colors.
