The Indiana Fever’s season-opening loss to the Dallas Wings has already sparked heated debate, with one sports radio host delivering a scathing takedown of Caitlin Clark that has fans buzzing. After Indiana fell 107-104 on opening night, the hype train surrounding the rookie sensation hit a major speed bump.

On “The Craig Carton Show,” host Tyrone Johnson didn’t hold back, questioning whether Clark’s superstar rise was overblown from the start. “The Caitlin Clark thing is over because she’s not the best player in the WNBA,” Johnson declared. “She’s not the best guard in the WNBA. She’s not even the best guard from her college class, because that’s Paige Bueckers, who plays for Dallas, who beat them in the season opener.”

Johnson took it a step further, comparing Clark’s meteoric popularity to former NBA guard Jeremy Lin’s “Linsanity” phenomenon. “We look back on Caitlin Clark, and we’re not gonna look back on her like she’s Michael Jordan. She’s Jeremy Lin. This is just Linsanity,” he added.

Clark’s stat line wasn’t bad—20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds—but five turnovers and a 7-for-18 shooting night, including a missed deep three that could have tied the game, left room for criticism. Defensively, she struggled too, with players she guarded reportedly shooting 9-for-12, exposing a weakness opponents will likely exploit all season.

But let’s not pile it all on Clark. The Fever’s bigger issue was team defense. Dallas shot a scorching 59% from the field and 52% from three-point range, shredding Indiana’s perimeter coverage. It’s a wake-up call for a team that looked dangerous offensively—Kelsey Mitchell dropped 30 points, Aliyah Boston added 23, and Clark led a thrilling third-quarter comeback while reaching 1,000 career WNBA points. But Dallas, led by Bueckers’ 20 points, simply looked more balanced and efficient.

One game doesn’t define a career, and Clark’s rookie season is just getting started. But if the Fever want to keep the hype alive, they’ll need to tighten up on defense—and fast. For now, the critics are having their say.
