An early-season reality check.

The Caitlin Clark-led Indiana Fever have received an early-season reality check that has tempered expectations just a bit. After entering the 2026 WNBA season with championship buzz surrounding their talented core—featuring the dynamic big three of Aliyah Boston, Caitlin Clark, and Kelsey Mitchell—the Fever have quickly learned that hype can only take you so far.

Following a season-opening loss to the Dallas Wings, Indiana has plummeted from fourth place in ESPN's preseason power rankings all the way down to 10th in the first in-season edition. That puts them behind even the winless Minnesota Lynx and the 1-1 Las Vegas Aces, who themselves suffered the largest season-opening loss by a defending champion in league history.

The numbers tell a clear story: the Fever's offense is not the problem. As ESPN's Michael Voepel noted, Indiana's big three combined for an impressive 73 points against Dallas. The issue? They still lost 107-104, largely because the Wings shot a blistering 59% from the field.

"The good news for the Fever is that their big three combined for 73 points," Voepel wrote. "The bad news is that wasn't enough to evade a 107-104 loss to visiting Dallas, which shot 59% from the field. Indiana will need to show improvement on defense."

Defense has been a lingering concern for the Fever. Last season, they ranked seventh out of 13 teams in defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions). While that marked a significant improvement—Indiana hadn't ranked higher than seventh in defensive rating since 2016—it likely isn't enough to propel them to the WNBA Finals, a stage the franchise hasn't reached in 11 years.

No one doubts that Clark and company can light up the scoreboard. But with the Los Angeles Sparks coming to town on Wednesday, the Fever have an opportunity to show they can lock down on the other end. If they don't, those defensive concerns will only grow louder.
