The Los Angeles Lakers' playoff hopes came to a sudden halt on Monday as the Oklahoma City Thunder swept them out of the Western Conference semifinals with a 115-110 defeat. Now, all eyes turn to LeBron James as he contemplates his next move—not necessarily retirement, but perhaps a departure from the Purple and Gold.
Despite completing his 23rd NBA season, James isn't expected to hang up his sneakers just yet. However, speculation has been swirling since he exercised his player option last summer that the 2025-26 season could be his last with the Lakers. The team isn't far from championship contention, but significant changes may be needed this offseason to bridge the gap.
Enter Byron Scott, a Lakers legend from the Showtime era, who believes one of those changes must involve showing LeBron the door. "You're getting paid $50 million," Scott said. "You're 41, 42, 43 years old. If the Lakers want to be a championship team for the next five, six, seven years, they need to build around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. You can't do that with him still here. That $50 million comes off the cap, and you can go get two really good, young players to help."
This isn't the first time Scott has voiced this opinion. A few months ago, he told local hip-hop station Power 106 that James "got to get the hell up out of" Los Angeles. The math is simple: The Lakers can't pay James nearly $50 million next season and expect to upgrade their roster. They're projected to have roughly $50 million in salary cap space, but they also need to re-sign key players like Reaves, Luke Kennard, and possibly Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton, and Jaxson Hayes.
On the flip side, if James wants to stay, the Lakers will have to get creative to build a contender around him. But with Scott's bold take, the debate over LeBron's future in LA is only heating up.
