A familiar face is returning to Hinkle Fieldhouse as part of Ronald Nored's first coaching staff. Here's what we know.

A major piece of Butler basketball history is coming home. Aaron Thompson, the program's all-time assist leader, is returning to Hinkle Fieldhouse to join new head coach Ronald Nored's inaugural staff as the director of player development.

Thompson's return marks a full-circle moment, bringing a beloved alumnus back to the program where he became a legend. After a three-year stint at George Washington—where he was promoted from director of player development to assistant coach—Thompson is back in Indianapolis, ready to impart his knowledge to the next generation of Bulldogs.

New head coach Ronald Nored, a fellow Butler icon from the team's back-to-back national championship game runs, couldn't be more thrilled. "Watching AT play, you knew he had a bright future in coaching," Nored said. "He will build strong relationships with our players and push them to maximize their potential... It’s great to have AT back at Hinkle where he belongs."

For Butler fans, Thompson epitomized "The Butler Way." A tenacious, lockdown defender and a selfless floor general, his career averages of 6.8 points, 4.1 assists, and 1.1 steals only tell part of the story. His leadership and basketball IQ made him the engine of those teams, qualities he'll now translate directly to coaching.

This hire signals an exciting new era under Ronald Nored, one deeply rooted in Butler's proud culture. By bringing back a program legend known for his defense, playmaking, and team-first attitude, Nored is building a staff that embodies the very identity Butler basketball is famous for. The future at Hinkle looks bright, with the past helping to guide the way.
