The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have found a gem in rookie edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., who is already turning heads at the team's minicamp. Selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft out of the University of Miami, Bain was widely projected as a top-10 or even top-five talent. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses is undeniable, but concerns over his measurables—specifically the dreaded "short arms" label—may have caused him to slide on draft day.

If his college resume is any indication, the Bucs could be getting a steal. During his standout career at Miami, Bain racked up 121 total tackles, with an eye-popping 33.5 of those for a loss. He added 20.5 sacks, one interception, two pass deflections, and four forced fumbles. His senior season was his most dominant yet: 54 total tackles, 15.5 for loss, 9.5 sacks, one pick, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble. That performance earned him ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors, the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top defensive end, and consensus All-American recognition. Bain also led the Hurricanes to the College Football Playoff National Championship, where they fell to Indiana.

Now, Bain is channeling that success into his NFL journey. The Buccaneers' rookie minicamp kicked off Friday, May 8, and runs through Sunday, May 10—and the early returns are promising. Head coach Todd Bowles, who also serves as defensive coordinator, didn't hold back in his praise for the young pass rusher.

"He looked like he was in midseason form," Bowles said. "Obviously, he's from Miami, so he's going to be practicing in the heat, where a lot of the other guys are going to struggle adjusting to this weather. It didn't bother him at all. He came in in great shape, and he ran around well and kind of picked up some things very well."

Bowles also highlighted Bain's football IQ and maturity. "He's got an old soul, so to speak. He understands his lineage, he understands the guys that came before him—they've got a lot of great players down there at the University of Miami as well as the high schools down there as well. He grew up around all of that."

For a rookie adjusting to the speed of the NFL, early praise from a head coach with Bowles' defensive pedigree is no small feat. Bain's combination of production, preparation, and poise could make him a key piece of Tampa Bay's pass rush for years to come.
