The Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo now have about six weeks to make a decision about his future with the organization.

The Milwaukee Bucks are facing a pivotal six-week window that will determine the future of their franchise cornerstone, Giannis Antetokounmpo. Team owner Jimmy Haslam announced Wednesday that a decision on the two-time MVP's future with the organization will be made before the NBA Draft in June, setting the stage for one of the most consequential moves in recent league history.

"Before the Draft is a natural time, right? Because if Giannis does play somewhere else, then we ought to get a lot of assets," Haslam told reporters, via TMJ4's Karley Marotta. "That's John's job to do it. If he's here, then you'll build the team differently."

Haslam emphasized that despite swirling rumors and speculation, the relationship between the Bucks and Antetokounmpo remains positive. "I just want to stress though that our relationship with him, despite what is reported by certain ESPN writers, is very positive," he added.

The situation reached a boiling point during the 2025-26 season, which saw Antetokounmpo appear in just 36 games—his lowest total since his rookie year. The 13-year veteran averaged an impressive 27.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, but a hyperextended left knee and bone bruise in March led to a contentious standoff between player and team over his return to play.

The Bucks ultimately missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade, a stunning fall for a franchise that won the 2021 NBA championship. The NBA even launched an investigation into the team's handling of Antetokounmpo's injury and return protocol. Reports surfaced that Antetokounmpo had requested a trade multiple times during the season, though no deal materialized.

For fans and analysts alike, a split makes sense on multiple levels. Antetokounmpo has just one guaranteed season remaining on his contract—a $58.5 million salary for 2026-27—with a player option for the following year. This puts the Bucks in a precarious position: either commit to building around their superstar or maximize his trade value before free agency looms.

With the draft just weeks away, the countdown is on. Whether Antetokounmpo stays in Milwaukee or heads elsewhere, the decision will reshape the NBA landscape and define the Bucks' future for years to come.
