In a groundbreaking move that blends global pop culture with the world's most-watched sporting event, FIFA has announced its first-ever World Cup halftime show featuring an unprecedented lineup of music icons. Madonna, Shakira, and BTS will headline the spectacular performance on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, transforming the traditional 15-minute soccer break into a Super Bowl-style extravaganza.
For American sports fans, halftime entertainment is a familiar tradition, but for soccer purists, this marks a dramatic departure from the sport's rigid customs. The "Laws of the Game" strictly mandate a 15-minute halftime interval, but with this all-star roster, FIFA is expected to extend the break significantly. To put it in perspective, Bad Bunny's Super Bowl LX performance lasted about 13 minutes, but the setup and teardown pushed the total halftime to 25 minutes.
The show's logistics present an interesting challenge. While last year's Club World Cup halftime performance was staged from the stands to protect the playing surface and save time, The Athletic reports that FIFA has drafted plans to use MetLife's temporary grass field for this historic event. FIFA has yet to confirm whether they'll take the field or extend halftime beyond the traditional 15 minutes.
The announcement, made around midnight Eastern time, featured a creative video with Coldplay's Chris Martin—who curated the show—alongside beloved Sesame Street characters. Global Citizen, the nonprofit organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty, will produce the spectacle. Adding to the excitement, headliner Shakira has also recorded the tournament's official song, "Dai Dai," with Nigerian superstar Burna Boy.
This isn't FIFA's first experiment with halftime entertainment. At last year's Club World Cup final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, also held in New Jersey, Doja Cat, J Balvin, Tems, and Coldplay performed from the stands in an 11-minute show that still stretched halftime past 20 minutes.
The 2026 World Cup kicks off June 11 in Mexico City, with each host nation receiving pregame musical performances. J Balvin will headline in Mexico City, Michael Bublé in Toronto, and Katy Perry in Los Angeles. With music legends and global icons taking center stage, this year's World Cup final promises to be as memorable for its halftime show as for the action on the pitch.
