Carlos Alcaraz is taking a smarter approach to the grueling clay-court season after a tough lesson learned last year. Following his recent loss to a resurgent Jannik Sinner, the young Spaniard is already mapping out a plan to stay healthy and competitive through the European swing.
Last season, Alcaraz's triumph at the Monte-Carlo Masters came at a cost. The physical toll led to fatigue that hampered him in the Barcelona Open final and ultimately forced a withdrawal from the Madrid Open. Now, with another deep run in Monte Carlo completed, he's determined to avoid a repeat.
Speaking after his match, Alcaraz outlined his primary ambition: "The main goal is to play the full clay season calendar." He acknowledged the challenge, referencing last year's injury setback, and emphasized a renewed focus on recovery. "We’re touching good and praying that nothing is going to happen to my body. So I’m going to heal my body much better than last year for sure," he stated.
His strategy involves flexibility and listening to his body. Alcaraz hinted he wouldn't hesitate to adjust his schedule, saying, "If I’m going to skip one, I will skip one tournament." His priority is clear: "If my body stays healthy, I’m going to do whatever it takes to be healthy and take care of my body."
This cautious approach marks a shift from 2025, where Alcaraz dominated the clay with relative ease. A key factor this year is the full-time return of Jannik Sinner, who missed most of last year's clay season due to suspension. Sinner's presence adds a formidable new challenge, making peak physical condition more crucial than ever for Alcaraz as he navigates the demanding weeks ahead in Barcelona, Madrid, and ultimately, Roland-Garros.
