The Boston Bruins are bringing the series back to TD Garden after a heart-stopping overtime effort to best the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in overtime.
It was as close as a hockey game could be played. Jeremy Swayman continued his outstanding elimination game standard by saving 26 of the 27 shots he faced. The Sabres' lone goal came just three and a half minutes into play. Rasmus Dahlin finished a picture-perfect one-timer from Jason Zucker to light the lamp and nearly bring the KeyBank Center down with it.
Swayman and the Bruins played more than 60 minutes of shutout hockey after that.
But the shots weren't exactly falling for the Black and Gold either.
Elias Lindholm was finally able to beat Alex Lyon halfway through the second period. It was a high-pressure offensive possession that resulted in Lindholm getting his stick on a juicy rebound in the point and firing a snap shot stick side.
Neither team was able to get the offense going in the third period thanks to the outstanding play of both Lyon and Swayman.
The overtime period started with more of the same. Lyon made three saves before Swayman made five of his own. But all it took was one breakaway to break the hearts of the Buffalo faithful, who were boisterous all game.

David Pastrnak found a feed fresh off the line change. Hampus Lindholm saw his star had a step, and sent him a long through pass to get behind the defense. Pastrnak had one man to beat, put the brakes on, faked a backhand shot to Lyon's stick side that forced the goaltender to go belly down on the ice before putting the puck on his forehand and crushing the Sabres' Cinderella story.
Now the Bruins will host the Sabres on Friday night in hopes of extending the series once more.
