The Boston Bruins are facing a critical moment in their playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres, and the news just got worse. Head coach Marco Sturm confirmed that second-line winger Viktor Arvidsson will not suit up for Game 6, delivering the injury update fans were dreading.
“I don’t think so,” Sturm told reporters, including Connor Ryan of the Boston Globe. “Maybe there’s a miracle overnight, but we’re planning not.” It’s a tough blow for a team that needs every weapon available in a must-win situation.
Arvidsson, 33, has been a revelation in his first season with the Bruins. The veteran sniper posted 25 goals and 29 assists for 54 points in 69 regular-season games, proving he still has plenty of gas left in the tank. His Stanley Cup Playoff pedigree has been on full display, too, making him a key difference-maker early in this series.
In Game 2, Arvidsson opened the scoring and later delivered the dagger that put Boston up 4-0 on Buffalo’s home ice. He followed that up with four shots and over 15 minutes of ice time in a narrow Game 3 loss. But after just a few shifts in Game 4, he was forced to leave the ice and hasn’t returned since.
Sturm’s cautious tone suggests Arvidsson is close to returning—but not close enough for Game 6. If the Bruins can extend the series and force a Game 7, there’s hope the veteran could rejoin the lineup. For now, Boston will have to dig deep and find a way to win without one of their most productive forwards.
