The Cleveland Browns have executed a high-stakes trade in the opening round of the 2026 NFL Draft, moving down from the sixth overall selection in a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

As first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Browns swapped their top-six positioning for the ninth overall pick, while also netting the 74th and 148th selections in return. This strategic maneuver comes as the draft board experienced an early shakeup with offensive playmakers dominating the top five.

With Notre Dame running back Jeremiah Love heading to the Arizona Cardinals and Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate being selected by the Tennessee Titans, several elite defensive prospects began to slide further than many analysts anticipated.

Seeing the board develop in their favor, the Browns opted to accumulate more draft capital while still remaining within the top ten. By acquiring an additional third-round pick at number 74, Cleveland now has more at-bats within the top 100 of this year’s class. For the Chiefs, the jump into the top six allows them to secure a blue-chip talent to bolster their pursuit of another title.
