The Cleveland Browns have long been the butt of jokes when it comes to draft blunders, but during the 2026 NFL Draft, the team showed a surprising level of restraint—and it might just be their smartest move yet.
It all started with a bold opening move: the Browns traded down from No. 6 to No. 9 with the Kansas City Chiefs. But rather than keep sliding back, they held firm. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Cleveland fielded two or three more calls at No. 9 but decided to stay put. Why? They had their eyes on Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano and could sense a tackle run coming. By standing their ground, they filled a major need without overplaying their hand.
The Browns showed similar discipline later in the draft. With the No. 39 pick, they had their sights set on Washington receiver Denzel Boston. The team had even discussed a potential trade-up with Seattle at No. 32 to snag him earlier. But Cleveland bet on a defensive-heavy run in the early picks and chose to sit tight. That patience paid off in a big way. They double-dipped at receiver, landing Texas A&M's KC Concepcion at No. 24—who reportedly had many suitors—and still got Boston at No. 39.
Of course, these picks still need to prove themselves on the field. But for a franchise known for chasing splashy moves, the decision to say "no" to two tempting trades is a refreshing change of pace. Sometimes the best draft decisions are the ones you don't make.
