The Denver Broncos entered the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear game plan, targeting needs along the interior defensive line, at running back, and especially at tight end. But what they didn't expect was for one of their mid-round targets to get snatched up two full rounds early—by an AFC South rival.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Broncos had their eyes on Texas A&M tight end Nate Boerkircher as a potential fourth-round steal. Boerkircher himself believed Denver was high on him and considered him a viable option early in Round 4. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars threw a curveball by selecting Boerkircher with the No. 56 overall pick in Round 2—roughly 50 spots earlier than where the Broncos hoped to grab him.

This surprise move caught fans, media, and even Boerkircher off guard. The Jaguars clearly valued the blocking tight end much higher than most draft boards suggested. For the Broncos, who ultimately addressed the tight end position later in the draft, losing out on Boerkircher was a reminder of how quickly draft boards can shift.

Looking ahead, this reach by Jacksonville will be one to watch. If Boerkircher develops into a reliable contributor, the Jaguars will look smart. But if he performs closer to his fourth-round projection, Denver may have dodged a bullet—and the Jaguars may have jumped the gun.
