Every NFL Draft ends with a bit of fun—the final pick, known affectionately as "Mr. Irrelevant," gets a unique celebration. This year, that honor belongs to Denver Broncos linebacker Red Murdock, selected with the 257th overall pick.
The tradition, started in 1976 by Paul Salata, typically includes a week of festivities in Newport Beach, California. But this year, things might look a little different. The Broncos held the last two picks of the draft, giving general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton a lighthearted decision: who gets the title?
"We were just trying to decide who would be better to go to Newport Beach," Paton joked after the draft. "It’s cool. I think in my career, we’ve drafted two, and if I’m not mistaken, they both made it onto the roster."
The Broncos selected tight end Dallen Bentley with pick No. 256 before taking Murdock at No. 257. Payton had a laugh about the situation, saying, "When we talked to Bentley, he’s vice president, Mr. Irrelevant. So if there’s anything that Murdock can’t handle, then the two of them can." Paton even suggested flying both players to the celebration.
This year, the festivities may have a Denver twist. Irrelevant Week CEO Melanie Salata Fitch told the Denver Gazette that they're considering hosting the event in the Mile High City. "If the Broncos embrace the idea, then we’ll design it in Denver," Fitch said. "If the Broncos say they’d rather not, we’ll bring him to California."
Regardless of location, the "Irrelevant Week" celebrations are scheduled for June. For Murdock, it's a memorable start to his NFL journey—and a reminder that even the last pick gets a moment in the spotlight.
