The wait is over, Memphis basketball fans. The city's next homegrown star is staying put. Briarcrest Christian School standout Fred Smith Jr., a 6-foot-7 forward in the 2026 class, has officially committed to play for head coach Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers.
Smith made his announcement on April 9 in front of a packed home gym, choosing the Tigers over finalists Saint Louis and Ole Miss. Rated as a four-star recruit and the No. 87 player nationally by the 247Sports Composite, Smith represents a major recruiting win for Hardaway. He is the program's first top-100 high school commitment since Mikey Williams in 2023.
This commitment is the culmination of a long courtship. Hardaway first offered Smith as a sophomore after he led Briarcrest to a state title in 2024. Since then, Smith has been a regular at FedExForum, while Hardaway has been a fixture at his high school games, building a strong relationship with the versatile forward.
Smith's senior-year resume is nothing short of spectacular. He recently captured his second consecutive TSSAA Division II-AA state championship and Mr. Basketball award, while also being named The Commercial Appeal's Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the second straight season. On the court, he averaged 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, showcasing the all-around game that makes him so coveted.
Briarcrest coach John Harrington believes Smith is a uniquely productive talent, potentially the first Memphis high school player to amass career totals surpassing 1,950 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 500 assists. Listed as a power forward, Smith's elite passing and high basketball IQ allow him to impact the game from multiple positions.
He now joins a promising 2026 recruiting class for Memphis, teaming up with fellow four-star Memphis native and close friend, guard Cello Jackson Jr. Together with returners Julius Thedford and William Whorton, Smith and Jackson form a core that injects significant local talent and excitement into the Tigers' roster for the future.
