The Milwaukee Brewers tried to rally in the top of the ninth inning, but the Detroit Tigers proved to be too tough.
On Wednesday night at Comerica Park in Detroit, the Tigers defeated the Brewers 5-2.
And guess who's taking the mound for the Tigers on Thursday in the series finale? None other than Detroit ace starting pitcher Tarik Skubal.
Brewers fans can have lunch while watching the Brewers try and knock off Skubal and the Tigers. First pitch in the Motor City is set for noon CT (1 p.m. ET).
But that's on Thursday. Let's break down what happened on Wednesday night.
In the top of the third, William Contreras singled to center and brought Brice Turang home for a 1-0 Brewers lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Detroit's Spencer Torkelson slammed his first home run this season. It was a two-run shot and put the Tigers up 2-1.
Then, in the bottom of the fifth with one out, Kevin McGonigle doubled to right center. Javier Baez scored on the play and extended the Tigers' lead to 3-1. With two outs in the fifth, Colt Keith brought McGonigle home with an RBI single. Detroit then held a 4-1 advantage over the Brewers.
Detroit added its final run in the bottom of the eighth on Kerry Carpenter's fifth home run this season, a solo blast to right field.
DL Hall was the starting pitcher for Brewers manager Pat Murphy on Wednesday night. Hall went two innings, didn't give up a hit or a run, walked two, and struck out two. Chad Patrick came on in the third inning and worked four innings.
Patrick allowed six hits and four runs (all earned), walked one, and struck out two. He took the loss for Milwaukee, dropping his record to 1-1 this season.
Tigers starter Casey Mize picked up the win, working six innings en route to making his overall record this season 2-1. Mize gave up three hits, one run (earned), walked three, and struck out seven.
Kyle Finnegan and Will Vest came on to pitch and both earned their third holds this season.
Milwaukee, though, wasn't done causing the Tigers trouble.
The Brewers forced Tigers veteran ace reliever Kenley Jansen to throw more than 30 pitches on Wednesday night. Jansen, who will be headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame when his career is over, had trouble finding the plate.
Milwaukee loaded the bases with two outs. Brice Turang stepped into the batter's box and made Jansen work some more.
Jansen probably will not be available for Thursday.
In the end, though, Jansen worked through his own self-made trouble to earn his sixth save this season.
Now, all eyes turn to Skubal taking the mound for Detroit on Thursday. The Brewers will try and have a solid game plan against one of MLB's best pitchers.
