When it comes to taking big swings on controversial quarterbacks, no NFL team has a bolder track record than the Cleveland Browns. And now, they might be setting their sights on another high-risk, high-reward prospect.
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is currently under investigation for allegedly placing over 10,000 online bets throughout his college career. The signal-caller has already entered a residential treatment program to address a gambling addiction, and he's fighting to preserve his eligibility for the 2026 college football season. But if those efforts fall short, all signs point toward the NFL Supplemental Draft—with Cleveland emerging as a potential landing spot.
"The Browns are among the teams putting in work on Sorsby, per a source," reported Tony Grossi, signaling growing momentum around the situation.
The investigation, involving both the Indiana Gaming Commission and the Ohio Casino Control Commission, centers on wagers Sorsby allegedly placed during his time at Indiana and later at Cincinnati. NCAA rules strictly prohibit student-athletes from betting on any NCAA-sanctioned sport, with penalties ranging from suspension to permanent ineligibility. While the bets were reportedly for small amounts, one of the most concerning allegations involves a wager on an Indiana game while he was still a redshirt freshman with the Hoosiers.
Despite the legal cloud, Sorsby's talent is hard to ignore. Over his four-year career split between Indiana and Cincinnati, he completed 594 of 968 passes for 60 touchdowns against just 18 interceptions. Several analysts believe he could become the highest-selected player in the Supplemental Draft in decades if he officially enters.
For a Browns franchise that has never shied away from taking chances on polarizing quarterbacks, Sorsby's arm talent might outweigh the off-field concerns. Whether that gamble pays off remains to be seen—but in Cleveland, the betting window is always open.
