It's been a tough stretch for Sean Murphy. The Atlanta Braves have placed their former MLB All-Star catcher back on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left middle finger, just days after returning from a long injury layoff. The timing is brutal for a Braves squad already fighting through a season full of setbacks.
Murphy had only recently rejoined the lineup after recovering from offseason hip surgery, playing in just four games before the new injury struck. The issue came during Sunday's game on a catcher's interference play, when Hyeseong Kim made contact with Murphy's glove. At first, the Braves hoped it wasn't serious. But further testing revealed a fracture, forcing the team to shut him down again.
When healthy, there's no doubt about Murphy's talent. He was an All-Star for Atlanta in 2023 and is one of the game's best two-way catchers. But staying on the field has become a real challenge. Murphy has played fewer than 95 games in both 2024 and 2025 due to recurring injuries, and 2026 is starting off with another tough break—literally.
This leaves the Braves thin behind the plate once more. During Murphy's previous absence, Atlanta relied heavily on Drake Baldwin and Jonah Heim. When Murphy returned earlier this month, the Braves designated Heim for assignment and later traded him to the Athletics. Now, with Murphy hurt again, Baldwin becomes the primary catcher, and the lack of depth behind him is a real concern. Baldwin is playing at an elite level, but the Braves will struggle to give him rest days without a reliable backup.
To shore things up, Atlanta signed veteran catcher Sandy León to a Major League deal, selected the contract of José Azócar, and optioned Jim Jarvis. These moves fill the open spots on the 40-man roster, but they don't fully solve the long-term worry.
The Braves have remained one of baseball's best teams despite injuries piling up across the roster. But Murphy's situation is becoming more concerning by the day—not because of his ability, but because of his availability. He barely had time to get back on the field before landing on the injured list again. For a player with so much potential, it's a frustrating cycle that Atlanta hopes will break soon.
