In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Baltimore Orioles turned the tables on the New York Yankees with a commanding 7-0 victory Wednesday, claiming two of three in the series just weeks after being swept by their rivals.
Right-hander Kyle Bradish was the star of the show, tossing six innings of one-hit ball while striking out seven and walking three. The performance marked Bradish's second straight dominant outing, following a 10-strikeout gem against the Athletics last week.
The Yankees' troubles began early when left-hander Max Fried was pulled after just three innings due to a sore elbow, with the Orioles already leading 3-0. Fried (4-3) is scheduled to see the team physician Thursday, leaving New York's rotation in flux heading into a weekend series against the crosstown Mets.
Baltimore wasted no time capitalizing on Fried's early exit. Coby Mayo opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning, and the Orioles added two more in the third on a sacrifice fly from Adley Rutschman and a run-scoring single by Pete Alonso.
Rutschman, the Orioles' All-Star catcher, provided the exclamation point in the fifth with a two-run homer that just nicked off right fielder Spencer Jones' glove before clearing the wall. Baltimore put the game away in the sixth on a two-run single by Blaze Alexander, who finished with three hits and two runs from the bottom of the order.
The shutout was the first of the season for the Orioles, who had been the last team in baseball to pitch one. It was a remarkable turnaround from earlier this month, when the Yankees outscored Baltimore 39-10 in a four-game sweep.
For the Yankees, Anthony Volpe went 0-for-3 with an error in his first game back from the minors. New York now heads to Citi Field for a three-game series against the Mets, with Cam Schlittler (5-1) starting the opener.
The Orioles enjoy an off day before traveling to Washington for a Friday night matchup, with Shane Baz (1-4) taking the mound for Baltimore.
