After leading the Illinois Fighting Illini to their first Final Four since 2005, head coach Brad Underwood has given the program and its fans a monumental season to remember. Despite a hard-fought 71-62 loss to the eventual runner-up UConn Huskies, the Illini finished the year ranked No. 5 in the final AP Poll with a 28-9 record, cementing this as the most successful campaign of Underwood's tenure.
In the aftermath of such a deep tournament run, speculation often swirls about a coach's future. However, Illini fans can breathe a sigh of relief. In a recent radio appearance, Underwood’s agent, Bret Just, offered a strong hint that the coach plans to see out his career in Champaign.
"I would actually be very surprised if he didn’t,” Just said regarding Underwood coaching at Illinois until his contract expires. “He literally loves this place, he loves this team... I think … the fact that he gets to enjoy this with his family members — specifically [assistant coach and son] Tyler — makes it all the more worthwhile and special."
This is significant reassurance for a program that has been transformed under Underwood's leadership. Since arriving in 2017, he has ended a period of inconsistency and built a perennial powerhouse, securing two Big Ten Tournament titles, an Elite Eight berth in 2024, and six consecutive 20-win seasons.
The agent's comments align with Underwood’s own stated focus: winning a national title for Illinois. He has previously indicated he would only reconsider his future once that goal is no longer his driving priority. For now, the message from his camp is clear—Brad Underwood is all in on the Illini, aiming to build on this historic Final Four run and chase that championship in the seasons to come.
