BLOOMFIELD — Six golfers stepped on the Bloomfield Country Club course for the Albia Blue Demons.

Five of those six golfers left with top-10 medals. The balance paid off for Albia as all six golfers were able to celebrate with a team championship trophy in hand posting a team score of 302 at the Davis County Invitational, winning by 16 strokes over Van Buren County.

"We don't do that every day, so it's pretty nice to see," Albia head boys golf coach Marty Hermsen said. "We did a good job managing the golf course. This isn't a long course by any means, but the greens are tricky. They're little and they're fast.

"The guys were grinding. They did a good job of keeping it in play and staying away from penalties."

The Blue Demons made a 26-shot improvement in a 48-hour span after firing a 328 at Edmondson Park in Oskaloosa. Albia finished third in the five-team tournament, the first time this season the team did not finish first in a competition.

"We were not the same team. We kind of had to regain our focus," Hermsen said. "I put a couple of guys on edge. I've got some junior varsity guys that are pushing for varsity spots. I kind of gave them a little bit of a warning and they responded really well."

Logan Bricker led Albia to the team's second 18-hole tournament title of the season, earning medalist honors with a round of 73. The Blue Demon senior was pushed by plenty of teammates, including Carson Sohn and Owen Kipfer who finished in a tie for second in the tournament with Van Buren County sophomore Leo Jirak with matching rounds of 75.

"This tournament was stacked. I was just fighting for pars on the back nine," Bricker said. "I made four straight pars down the stretch. That's what did it for me. My putting saved me. Hitting the greens can be tough out here, so the focus was to make sure and get in the hole in two putts. I knew just how close it was.

"We have a strong team just like last year. I'm looking forward to the rest of the year with them."
