After entering the 2025 season with the third-best farm system in the sport, according to MLB Pipeline, the Boston Red Sox farm system took a big hit ahead of the 2026 season, falling to 14th.
The Boston system is chock-full of intriguing arms, but thanks to the graduations of Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell, as well as the trade that sent Jhostynxon Garcia to Pittsburgh, there is a lack of high-end position player prospects in the system.
The top-ranked hitter and second overall prospect in the system is 20-year-old shortstop Franklin Arias, who ranks No. 46 on Baseball America's Top 100 prospects list. Currently in Double-A Portland, Arias is, according to SoxProspects.com, a "Potential everyday regular at shortstop. Ceiling of a quality regular who provides value with his glove and contact ability. Hit tool is a standout tool, but a lack of power and speed limits its upside. Defensive profile provides him a solid floor. High baseball IQ; actively seeks to learn more and improve. Needs to get stronger and continue to physically mature to reach his potential."
Arias is doing everything he can to dispel the notion that he's a glove-first player to start the 2026 season. Through Portland's first 14 games of the campaign, Arias is slashing .467/.564/.833 (10 games). His OPS of 1.397 leads the Eastern League and ranks second across all of Double-A.

What is most impressive about Arias' early-season success is his age. He is one of just four players at the level aged-20 or younger, including MLB Pipeline's third and fourth overall prospects, Jesus Made of the Brewers, and Leo De Vries of the Athletics.
If Arias has truly unlocked a new level at the plate, it could be a real game-changer for a Red Sox system that is in desperate need of impact bats.

Anthony Eyanson is off to a fantastic start to his professional career. Through three starts with High-A Greenville, he has allowed just one run on five hits across 12.1 innings pitched, striking out 18. Per SoxProspects, Eyanson, who was the Red Sox third round selection in the 2025 draft out of LSU, is the sixth-ranked prosect in the system.

It's been a great introduction to the Boston organization for left-handed starter Jake Bennett. Bennett has made four starts with Triple-A Worcester, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits across 16.1 innings, holding opponents to a .140 batting average. The Red Sox acquired Bennett in an offseason deal with the Washington Nationals.

According to 7News' Ari Alexander, Red Sox fifth-ranked prospect, starter Juan Valera, will not need any imaging done after leaving Thursday night's start with elbow inflammation. Valera will be shut down from throwing for two weeks, per Alexander.
While the Red Sox system lacks the high-end talent it had just one year ago, there are still plenty of guys for fans to get excited about.
