VfL Bochum have suffered a significant blow ahead of their final Bundesliga 2 clash of the season against SC Karlsruhe this Sunday, with promising young midfielder Mats Pannewig ruled out due to a shin injury.

The 21-year-old's misfortune struck just twelve minutes into last Saturday's match against Hannover 96. After a tough challenge, Pannewig went down in visible discomfort and, following several minutes of on-field treatment, was forced to leave the pitch.

Medical examinations conducted on Monday, 11 May, confirmed the extent of the damage—a shin injury that will keep him sidelined for an extended period. The good news? Surgery is not required. Instead, the club's medical team has opted for a conservative treatment plan, which means several weeks of rest followed by a gradual return to full activity.

However, the timing could hardly be worse for the youngster. Not only will he miss the season finale against Karlsruhe, but he is also expected to sit out the first few weeks of pre-season training, which kicks off towards the end of June. For a player who had been hitting his stride and showing impressive development in recent months, this setback is a tough pill to swallow.

VfL Bochum's director of football, Simon Zoller, expressed his disappointment but remained optimistic about Pannewig's recovery. "I am incredibly sorry for Mats' unfortunate injury, both for the team and especially for him personally. His development, particularly in recent months, has been really good. Nevertheless, I am absolutely convinced that he will give it his all and come back even stronger—and he will receive the full support of VfL Bochum."

For fans and teammates alike, this is a reminder of the physical toll football can take, even on the brightest young talents. But with the club's full backing and a determined mindset, Pannewig will be looking to turn this challenge into a comeback story.
