There's a familiar face returning to the sidelines for Mitchell High School girls soccer, and it's one that Kernel fans will surely recognize. Bob Lemon, who previously led the program for six seasons, is coming back to take the reins as head coach starting in 2026, the school announced Tuesday.
Lemon's first stint with the Kernels spanned from 2017 to 2022, where he compiled a record of 36-41-6. His return comes at a pivotal time for the program, which finished 5-10 last season and posted a combined 10-18-1 mark over two years under former coach Kindra Decker, who resigned in January.
Mitchell High School Activities Director Cory Aadland expressed confidence in the hire, noting Lemon's deep roots in the community. "Bob's experience and history with our program make him an outstanding choice to lead our girls soccer team," Aadland said in a press release. "He has long been a respected soccer coach within the Mitchell community, and he understands our values while bringing a proven ability to connect with student-athletes and foster a competitive, positive environment."
Lemon, who teaches science at MHS, has stayed active in the school's athletic scene, serving as an assistant coach for the track and field team over the past two seasons. He also previously coached boys soccer and track and field at Mitchell Christian, giving him a well-rounded perspective on developing young athletes.
For Lemon, the opportunity to rejoin the Kernels is personal. "I'm grateful to be back with the Kernel girls soccer program and looking forward to reconnecting with our players," he said in a statement. "It's a special opportunity to work with many of them again, and I'm excited to help them make the most of the upcoming season. I'm also looking forward to getting to know the younger players who have joined the program over the past few years and supporting their continued growth."
With a coach who knows the program inside and out, Mitchell soccer fans have plenty of reasons to look ahead with optimism. Whether you're a player gearing up for the season or a fan looking to show your Kernel pride, now is the perfect time to gear up with the latest Mitchell High School soccer apparel and gear.
