After a stormy Wednesday, the sun finally broke through at John Hunt Park on Thursday—and the soccer action was just as bright. The stage was set for semifinal showdowns, and local teams delivered unforgettable performances.
The morning started with heartbreak for Athens Golden Eagles girls' soccer, who fell 2-1 to Homewood in the state semifinals. Despite a goal from Charleigh Maxson, the team couldn't find the equalizer, ending their season in a narrow defeat.
But the drama was far from over. In a match that had everything, the Bob Jones Patriots faced off against Hewitt-Trussville. Arnav Maskey struck in the first minute to give Bob Jones an early lead, but the Huskies answered with a penalty kick less than 60 seconds later. The back-and-forth continued when Maskey drew a penalty in the 41st minute to regain the lead. With the clock winding down, it looked like the Patriots were headed to the championship—until the Huskies scored with under 30 seconds left to force overtime.
After one extra period wasn't enough, the game seemed destined for penalty kicks. But Zac McGee had other plans. With less than 10 seconds remaining in the second overtime, he unleashed a stunning upper-90 shot to send Bob Jones to the state championship. It was the kind of clutch moment that defines champions.
In 1A-3A girls' action, Whitesburg Christian faced Donoho in another thriller. The Warriors took an early lead, but the Falcons quickly tied it up. Then Abby Rose Smith took matters into her own hands, dribbling through the entire Falcons defense to level the score. With just under four minutes left, and after several near misses, Kylie Lane netted the game-winner, sending Whitesburg to the state title game on Friday.
Madison Academy also competed in the soccer state semifinals, but their game had not yet concluded at the time of publication. Stay tuned for updates.
With the sun shining and the stakes rising, these teams proved that when the pressure is on, the best players rise to the occasion. Now, it's all about the championship—and the gear to match.
