Rick Bowness agreed to a contract on Thursday to return as coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets next season. Bowness led Columbus to a 21-11-5 record after taking over for Dean Evason on Jan. 12. “Rick has done an outstanding job since his arrival and it was obvious to all of us that he is the right person to lead our club as head coach,” President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell said in a statement.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are locking in their leader for the future. Head coach Rick Bowness has agreed to a contract to return behind the bench next season, the team announced Thursday.

Bowness took over a team in turmoil on January 12th and engineered a stunning mid-season turnaround. Under his guidance, the Blue Jackets surged to a 21-11-5 record, including an incredible 18-2-4 run in his first 24 games that propelled them from the Eastern Conference basement into playoff contention.

Despite a late-season slide that saw them miss the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year, the organization's faith in Bowness is unwavering. "Rick has done an outstanding job since his arrival and it was obvious to all of us that he is the right person to lead our club," said President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell. "Our players will continue to benefit greatly from his leadership as we work towards our goal of competing for a Stanley Cup."

The veteran coach, who will be the NHL's oldest at 71 next season, made his intentions clear after a season-ending loss. In a passionate post-game rant, Bowness declared that "losing is not important enough to them" and vowed to change the team's culture if he returned. "If we're back, we'll straighten it out," he promised.

That mission begins now. While the Blue Jackets' 92-point season marked the fifth-highest total in franchise history, falling short of the playoffs with that many points is a new and painful experience. With core players like defenseman Zach Werenski locked in, Bowness's task is to build on the foundation of resilience he established and translate regular-season success into a long-awaited postseason return.
