The Tahlequah Tigers saw their season come to a heartbreaking end on Friday, May 8, falling 6-2 to Bishop Kelley in the Regional Finals—a game that was as much about weather as it was about baseball.
After a rain delay pushed things back, the Tigers came out swinging. Cutter Girdner led off the first inning with a single, setting the stage for some smart baserunning. He moved to second, then third on consecutive fielder's choices, and finally scored on a passed ball to give Tahlequah an early 1-0 lead.
But the Comets answered right back in their half of the inning, plating three runs to take control. The score stayed at 3-1 until the third inning, when Mother Nature stepped in—lightning in the area forced a two-hour delay with two outs and a runner on base.
When play resumed, the Tigers showed some fight. In the fourth inning, Will Talburt legged out a triple, beating the throw to third and sparking a rally. Kale Dobbins followed with a single to bring Talburt home, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
That would be as close as Tahlequah would get. Bishop Kelley added three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, putting the game out of reach and punching their ticket to the State Tournament.
For the Tigers, it was a season of promise that ended just short of glory—a tough loss, but one that showed their grit from the first pitch to the last out.
