The North Carolina Tar Heels' head coach recently landed in hot water.

Bill Belichick's transition from NFL legend to college head coach has hit a rough patch, and the criticism is mounting. After a disappointing debut season with the North Carolina Tar Heels, the 74-year-old coach is now facing backlash for his players' off-field behavior, with one professor accusing him of "tarnishing the reputation" of the university.

The Tar Heels' 2025-26 campaign started with promise—two wins in their first three games—but quickly unraveled into a four-game losing streak that set the tone for the rest of the season. UNC finished with a dismal 4-8 record, missing bowl eligibility entirely. To make matters worse, not a single Tar Heel was selected in the NFL Draft this spring, marking the first time that has happened since 2016. For a program with Belichick's pedigree at the helm, it's a stark reality check.

Now, the trouble has spilled off the field. According to WRAL, multiple UNC football players have been cited for speeding, reckless driving, or parking in spaces reserved for individuals with disabilities. These incidents have drawn the ire of UNC professor Mark Peifer, who sent a pointed email to athletic director Bubba Cunningham. "Is there no one who can rein in these players, probably only a subset of the football team, who are tarnishing the reputation of our school and of all Carolina athletes?" Peifer wrote.

Peifer's frustration is understandable. As the face of the program, Belichick is responsible for more than just X's and O's—he's tasked with shaping young men both on and off the field. The six-time Super Bowl champion built his legacy in New England on discipline and accountability, so seeing his players run afoul of the law is a troubling disconnect.

For Belichick, the good news is that the new season is still on the horizon. There's time to right the ship, instill better habits, and prove that his leadership extends beyond the playbook. But if he wants to win back the trust of the UNC community—and restore the program's reputation—he'll need to step up and take control before the wheels come off completely.
