As the Iowa Hawkeyes gear up for training camp, the buzz around the 2026 season is heating up. Fans are already diving into predictions, and one big question looms: can Iowa's defense maintain its elite status with a younger, less-experienced unit?
On offense, the quarterback battle between Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown will be the headline story this fall. But it's the defensive side of the ball that's drawing some serious attention from CBS Sports. While Iowa's defense is always given the benefit of the doubt, this year's group is a bit of a wild card.
Defensive coordinator Phil Parker has built a reputation for turning out top-tier defenses year after year. Since 2014, Iowa hasn't finished outside the top 20 in scoring defense—an incredible streak. But 2026 brings a new challenge: just three returning starters and the fewest career FBS snaps (4,995) among Power Four defenses. That's a lot of inexperience by Iowa's standards.
Still, as CBS's Cody Nagel points out, betting against Phil Parker is a risky move. "He keeps finding a way. At some point, you just stop betting against the guy," Nagel writes. The key here is that "less-experienced" doesn't mean young. The Hawkeyes are still loaded with upperclassmen who've spent two, three, or even four years learning Parker's system. They just haven't seen as much live game action as past units.
So, is it an overreaction to question Iowa's defense? History says yes. But with so many new faces, even the most loyal Hawkeyes fans might be holding their breath just a little.
