ELNORA – On a perfect sunny afternoon at Wayne Davis Field, the North Daviess Cougars found themselves in a high-scoring battle with South Knox, ultimately falling 14-10 on Tuesday. Despite the ideal conditions, the Spartans capitalized on key opportunities, stringing together several big innings to secure their 10th win of the season.
The game started rough for the Cougars, as South Knox’s first five batters reached base against starter Markus Graber, plating four runs. Graber quickly settled down, retiring the final two hitters to limit the damage to a 4-0 deficit.
Graber then boosted his own cause in the bottom of the first, launching a two-out, two-run home run that also scored Zane Sample, cutting the lead to 4-2. Gentry Rollins added another run, and by the second inning, Jason Jones and courtesy runner Bentley McNabb crossed the plate to give North Daviess a 5-4 lead. The Cougars stretched their advantage to 6-4 in the third when Campbell Wittmer reached base and scored on a deep fly ball to center field.
However, momentum shifted in the top of the fourth. After two walks, the Cougars turned to reliever Koen Stoll, but South Knox answered with four hits, including back-to-back doubles, to plate five runs and reclaim a 9-6 lead. North Daviess responded quickly, as Hayden Sample walked and scored on Zane Sample’s second double of the game, making it 9-7.
Errors plagued the Cougars in the fifth inning. A wild pitch and a misplayed ball allowed four more Spartan runs to cross the plate, extending the gap to 13-7. Freshman Braydon Hostetler took the mound in the sixth, surrendering one run as South Knox pushed the lead to 14-7.
The bottom of the sixth marked the game’s first 1-2-3 inning, giving the Cougars a brief respite. Hostetler retired the first two batters in the seventh, then relied on Luke Wittmer to secure the final out. North Daviess mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, with McNabb doubling in a run and Keaton Graber adding an RBI single, but the comeback fell short at 14-10.
For fans of the game, this matchup was a reminder of how quickly momentum can swing in baseball—and how crucial it is to limit mistakes in big moments. Whether you're a player or a fan, having the right gear can make all the difference in staying focused and performing at your best.
