Berlin Brothersvalley softball is rolling, and senior Elsie Barna is writing her name into the program's history books. In a decisive 15-7 victory over rival Meyersdale, Barna smashed two hits to surpass 100 for her career, becoming the first Mountaineer ever to reach that prestigious milestone.
"It's amazing just to come out here and play ball every day and do what we do," said Barna, an Edinboro University recruit. "It feels great to hit the ball, and it makes me feel accomplished to reach 100 hits and be the first one to do it in school history."
This achievement is part of a remarkable senior campaign for Barna, who also recently topped 100 career runs scored. She's now just three RBIs shy of another century mark, a feat made even more impressive considering she missed the final eight games of last season with a knee injury—an injury she battled through to still earn second-team all-state honors.
Her historic day powered Berlin to a 9-0 start, the program's best under veteran coach Brian Slope. The win showcased a deep and potent lineup that looks built to defend last season's historic run, which saw the team capture its first-ever District 5-1A title and win a PIAA playoff game.
The Mountaineers' success is truly a family affair. The starting lineup features three sets of sisters: Elsie and Bena Barna, Bryn and Coral Prosser, and Callie and Elena Ritchey. That family chemistry was on full display against Meyersdale, as those six players combined for 15 of the team's 19 hits. The power surge included home runs from Bryn Prosser (2-run), freshman Callie Ritchey (solo), and a crushing 3-run shot from Elena Ritchey.
"That adds to the team chemistry," Elsie Barna emphasized. "We are family and we play like a family on the field. We all feel like a family when we play."
With a perfect record, a record-setting senior leader, and a uniquely close-knit roster, Berlin Brothersvalley has all the ingredients for another special season, proving that talent and teamwork are a championship combination.
